"Intelligent Design", Creationism, and the Assault on Science Education -

'Creationism is evolving. Its promoters now disguise it as up-to-date biological science. Well-financed groups such as the Discovery Institute in the US, and Truth in Science in the UK, are trying to introduce their own materials into the classroom, under the guise of correcting alleged biases in current teaching. Denominational education, and the growth of “faith schools” in England, contribute to the problem, strengthening the obscurantist wings of the various religions, and actively interfering with students’ understanding of central scientific concepts.
Paul will discuss present day Creationism, its literature and evolution, the reasons for its appeal, the nature of the current threat, and what we can do about it.
Paul Braterman has been Reader (and is now honorary Senior Research Fellow) in Chemistry in Glasgow and Regents Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Texas. His work relating to geochemistry of the early Earth has been funded by NASA, NSF, and the UK SERC, and he is currently on the committee of the British Centre for Science Education.
